TGIF is hosted by Ginger at Greads. It’s about answering/asking our readers a random book related question. The question posted by Ginger today is…
Book to Movie: Which book turn movie do you feel did the best adaptation? What about the worst?
The Good
Lord of the Rings
I’ll admit I enjoyed reading this series pre-movie. But I don’t know that I fell in love with the epic until I watched the movies. As good as my imagination is…Peter Jackson had a better one. Seeing that world brought to life made me fall in love with the story.
The Bad
Marley and Me
I hated where they ended this movie! Sorry if anyone didn’t see this coming but the dog dies. Yep, it’s a story of the life of a dog…where did you think it was going to end?
Anyway, What I loved in the book was that the author continued his story after the death of the beloved dog. You laughed and cried along with Grogan. You found CLOSURE. Wonderfully handled…The movie…basically: Dog Dies. The End. Please exit the theater tissues in hand.
The Ugly
My Sister’s Keeper
The WHOLE point of Picoults’s book is the ending! And it’s such a perfect ending in the book. Meaningful. Resonant. An entire-box-of-tissues cry-fest. What did the movie go and do? CHANGE THE ENDING!! Seriously? Wtf? Still very offended by this adaptation…
What about you? Any great adaptations that enhanced a book for you? Any viewings that frustrated you to no end? Do Tell…
I forgot about My Sister’s Keeper! I hate that they changed the ending in that one … the book was so much better.
Forrest Gump… UGH!!! Still haven’t finished that book – Movie SO much better… Such a fan of the movie that I figured the book had to be amazing… not so much… Props to Hollywood for that one!
And book I’m most eager/nervous to see turned into a movie this year? The Hunger Games. I’m on book two (I think either you or someone else told me I needed to read it and I finally did), and the trailer looks awesome (except for Katniss’ curves – whaaat?).
I even force-fed this one to DJ, who finally broke down and bought it yesterday because I refused to give up my Kindle in order for him to read my copy 🙂
I agree that Lord of the Rings was one of the best! Haven’t seen nor read your other two!

Thank goodness I haven’t seen the movies on your worst list – I would hate it if they changed the ending! And Lord of the Rings – agreed – incredible movie.
Marley & Me: didn’t read and didn’t see the movie. i don’t like to be overly emotional, so i draw the line BEFORE Marley & Me. because i’m a smart cookie.
My Sister’s Keeper: i had no idea what this book was about so when i read it and finally snotted my way til the end, i THREW the book across the room and vowed to never read Jodi Picoult again. i haven’t seen the movie, don’t plan to, and still haven’t given poor Jodi another chance.
(whoa i sound particularly harsh with My Sister’s Keeper. i’m serious, i hate getting overly emotional. unless it is with YA fantasy such as PRINCE ASH. that is okay with me.)
Haha, Ash, sweet as he is is no where near as emotional as Picoult! Like Nicholas Sparks…you know you’re going to cry!!
also, i think the reason i sounded so harsh in my comment is because i’m getting emotional just thinking about Marley & Me and My Sister’s Keeper. hehehe
Haha, completely understand 😉
I hated My Sisters Keeper the movie…they should have at least kept the ending the same!!! I forgot how crapy they made Marley and Me…I loved that book but Owen Wilson blew it into the toilet!!!
My personal reading challenge is to read The Lord of the Rings series this year. The movies are so good.
I haven’t seen the bad or the ugly, but heard other people say what you have.
